Simon Donnelly has praised Nathan Patterson and compared him to Kieran Tierney.

The former Scotland international thinks the Everton defender is similar to his Arsenal counterpart when he was the same age.

It has been this season that the 20-year-old has become a regular fixture for Frank Lampard's side, and the ex-Celtic man feels the Rangers youth academy graduate is on the same trajectory as Tierney.

"Patterson is a big player, I really like him. He's very similar to a young Kieran Tierney on the left-hand side," he said.

"There's no fear in his play, wants to get forward at any opportunity, he's easily slotted into this Scotland team and has already scored a goal.

"I've seen how he's a fan favourite for Everton and he's going from strength to strength."

The Scotland defender did pick up an injury during the 3-0 victory against Ukraine.

He has been sent back to Merseyside for scans, and Donnelly hopes it is not something that holds the player back.

"Patterson did get an injury which will be a small setback for him, but Hickey from Brentford came on and was really good as well.

"Patterson will be a big player for Scotland in the future and he'll be a big player for Everton, he has a bright future at only 20-years-old."
