National Fish and Chip Awards: Three local takeaways to batter it out for Takeaway of the Year title
Some of the Tees Valley's best loved chippies will go head-to-head in a bid to take-away a national fish and chip award.
Robinsons Traditional Fish and Chips at Clifton Avenue in Billingham, Locker’s Fish and Chips on High Street, Marske, and Yarm Road Fish and Chips, Darlington, are among 40 chippies hoping to hook the Takeaway of the Year title in the National Fish and Chip Awards. Organised by the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), the contest sees shortlisted chippies set tasks, challenges and interviews before the final winner is announced early next year.
Areas covered include product knowledge, environmental and sustainability best practice and customer service. The next round will see the official board of judges chopping the list down to 20 and then to the final 10.
President of the NFFF, Andrew Crook, said the category has seen many "fantastic"submissions. “Fish and chips is such an iconic British staple and it takes huge amounts of skill and hard work to not only perfect the dish and other menu offerings but to also overcome challenges and sustain the business while keeping employees motivated and fulfilled," he said.
"There’s a lot to it and each awards season we see greater depths of talent, expertise and business acumen and this trend has continued this year, too. “Takeaway of the Year is the big one, so it goes without saying that the journey it takes contenders on is very intense."
The awards ceremony will be held on February 26 at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge, London. There the winner will be announced, taking the baton from current champion, Caerphilly-based Ship Deck.
Principal sponsor of the National Fish and Chip Awards 2025 is Seafood from Norway. Victoria Braathen, UK director of the Norwegian Seafood Council, said: “As a proud sponsor of the National Fish and Chip Awards, we’re thrilled to see this competition, year after year, attract such an outstanding pool of talented operators. It’s undeniable that fish and chips hold a special place in British culture, but it’s the passion and commitment to excellence that these operators demonstrate daily that gives this sector its truly iconic status."
