It’s that time of year again where the best of the TV industry vie for a prize at the National Television Awards (NTAs), where the public get to vote for their favourite stars and shows and the results will finally be revealed tonight, on Tuesday, 5 September.

The shortlist for the awards show was revealed on Tuesday, 15 August, confirming which programmes and presenters had been selected.

There was a mixture of household names and up-and-coming stars nominated, while late public figures like Paul O’Grady and Dame Deborah James received posthumous recognition.

It is all down to the general public to decide who wins, so here is everything you need to know in order to take part.

When are the NTAs happening?

The NTAs will be taking place on Tuesday 5 September, and the event will be held at the O2 arena in London and broadcast live on ITV1.

Comedian Joel Dommett is the host of the 2023 edition, and those who wish to attend the awards show can buy tickets from the NTAs official website.

How to vote for the NTAs and when the deadline is

The public vote for the NTAs is still open, and so anyone can select their favourite shows and stars for each category on the award show’s official website.

There are 16 categories in total for fans to vote in, but members of the public can only select one contender in each. The deadline to vote for the NTAs shortlist is noon on Tuesday 5 September - the same day that the ceremony will take place - so those still waiting to vote should do so soon.

Who is nominated at the NTAs?

As previously, Paul O’Grady received a posthumous nomination for his show For the Love of Dogs, which was nominated in the factual entertainment category. The beloved TV star died on 28 March.

Dame Debroah James was nominated in the authored documentary category for her programme Bowelbabe In Her Own Words, and the late star is joined by Lewis Capaldi in the category.

Phillip Schofield is missing from his usual spot in the TV Presenter category after leaving This Morning with “immediate effect” on 20 May - he was originally longlisted with his former co-star Holly Willoughby, but both have been dropped from the shortlist although colleague Alison Hammond is still in the running for the prize.

Schofield and Willoughby often presented This Morning the day after the NTAs whilst still hungover, but that won't be the case this year. Hammond's co-star Dermot O'Leary has also not made the cut from longlist to shortlist.

Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly were selected for the shortlist, and the Geordie duo will be tough competition to beat as they took the prize in 2022 for the 21st year in a row.

In the new drama category Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, Blue Lights, Beyond Paradise and Wednesday were amongst the names shortlisted. The returning drama category, meanwhile, saw Call the Midwife, Happy Valley, Stranger Things and Vera be selected.
