National Theatre at Home: Alan Bennett's The Madness of George III, starring Mark Gatiss, to be broadcast for free

Alan Bennett’s The Madness of George III will be the latest show to be streamed for free as part of the National Theatre at Home series.

The acclaimed 2018 production from Nottingham Playhouse, which starred Mark Gatiss in the title role, will be broadcast on the National Theatre’s YouTube channel next Thursday (June 11). It will then be available to watch on demand for the next seven days.

Bennett’s play, first staged at the National Theatre in 1991 and subsequently turned into an award-winning film in 1994, is a fictionalised version of the true events of King George III’s battle with mental illness during the latter half of his reign towards the end of the 18th century.

Nottingham Playhouse’s production was directed by its artistic director Adam Penford and also starred Adrian Scarborough and Debra Gillett. Its broadcast was the first time that NT Live collaborated with a venue outside of London.

The Donmar Warehouse’s 2014 production of Coriolanus , featuring an award-winning performance from Tom Hiddleston, will be broadcast tonight (June 4) at 7pm, and further productions will be announced in the coming weeks.

The series of livestreams began in May with One Man Two Guvnors, with a different show broadcast every Thursday. While the streams are free to watch, viewers can make a donation to the National Theatre and other participating theatres to support them while they remain impacted by closures forced by the coronavirus pandemic.
