Natural History Museum to run yoga sessions under a giant moon installation

Things to do in London this May

Just when you thought the capital’s yoga scene couldn’t possibly go anywhere else, the Natural History Museum has announced it will be offering 'moon yoga' sessions this summer.

A giant indoor moon is set to arrive at the museum’s Jerwood Gallery in May, providing the inspiration for a series of lunar events taking place at the venue, including moon yoga.

Each class will be led by an instructor, who will guide guests through a series of poses relating to the enormous lunar structure hanging above them. Those looking to take it one step further can opt for events that tie into phases of the moon, like the new moon yoga Nidra class with a crystal sound bath on June 3, or the full moon Kundalini yoga session two weeks later, on June 17. Other events on the programme are set to focus on Dynamic Vinyasa, Slow Flow and Hatha Yoga.

The six-metre spherical installation, created by artist Luke Jerram, will resemble the Earth's Moon with the help of high-resolution NASA imagery, and will be at a scale of 1:500,000 – which means every centimetre will be the equivalent of five kilometres.

Yoga enthusiasts and astrology lovers alike can catch the piece, titled Museum of the Moon, at the Natural History Museum from May 17 – September 8. The display coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing and the structure arrives in London following a worldwide tour.
