A naturist swimming club is being investigated by the council after it began naked classes for children in a local swimming pool.

Ryedale Naturist Club, which holds fortnightly swims at Derwent Pool, near Malton, North Yorkshire, has come under scrutiny after it invited under 18s to swim in the nude with a parent or guardian.

Ryedale District Council, which owns the pool, has launched an investigation into whether there is a "risk to the welfare of children".

Lead councillor Luke Ives said: "While there is nothing wrong in the naturist club hiring the pool, it must be done in a way that does not give rise to any risk to children.

"I have asked that an urgent investigation takes place to ascertain the facts.

"If there is deemed to be any risk to the welfare of children, the council will not hesitate to take immediate action."

Naturists from Teesside and further pay £5 for nude swim sessions at the public pool every two weeks.

Its website states: "If you bring the kids (18 and under) we will even let them in free (max two per adult) but they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times."

The pool and sauna offers the "best chance of a naked swim" in the North when its doors close to the public between 3pm and 5pm every other Sunday.

The club, run by 'Janet', said its sessions are a great way to make new friends and insists no sexual activity of any type takes place.

It claims that the sessions, offered at the pool for more than 30 years, offer a "safe and friendly environment" for the whole family.
