NatWest has shed some light on the procedures for expiring bank cards after being questioned by a customer. In an exchange over X, the customer expressed concerns saying: "My debit card expires in December - NatWest have said a new card on on its way."

They continued: "I won’t be home for a couple of weeks - meaning no way to get my new card - current one expires December - so why issue a new one now?" To clarify how the process works, NatWest replied: "We send cards out roughly one month before the other one expires. Your current card will continue to work up to the end of December if that's when it expires."

The customer responded to say they would arrange for a relative to secure the new card while away. NatWest advised them they could reach out for assistance once they had returned and they had picked up their new card.

Customers also have the option to add their card to apps like Apple Pay or Google Pay to make transactions. You can use these methods to make payments beyond your contactless limit even if you don't have mobile signal at the time.

Highlighting an issue affecting all bank customers, MPs have submitted an early day motion on the topic of widespread branch closures, calling for more bank hubs. These locations are run by the Post Office providing everyday banking services. The motion calls for a debate in Parliament about "the importance of maintaining access to in-person banking and cash services", pointing out that rural areas in particular "urgently need more banking hubs".

There are currently over 75 banking hubs in operation, with plans to increase the number to more than 350. LINK recently approved an additional 15 after evaluating several areas affected by branch closures.

These are the 15 locations where these banking hubs will open:

  • Sidcup (London)

  • Normanton (West Yorkshire)

  • Hailsham (East Sussex)

  • Frome (Somerset)

  • Sheerness (Kent)

  • Whitley Bay (Tyne and Wear)

  • Rugeley (Staffordshire)

  • Newquay (Cornwall)

  • Market Harborough (Leicestershire)

  • Thetford (Norfolk)

  • Monmouth (Wales)
