NCIS' Special Agent Gibbs is about to have his service disrupted, as a new "force" is set to join the team in the form of ER and Prime Suspect star Maria Bello.

According to TVLine, Maria will be joining the 15th season of NCIS as an as-yet-unnamed series regular, who will act as a 'foil' to Gibbs. Sounds intriguing.

Maria's character has been billed as "a positive force, mischievous and at times acerbic", so yeah, we can't wait to see what she'll bring to the new season.

The official description for her character – who will enter in episode four – reveals she has served "two tours in Afghanistan" as a "second lieutenant in the army".

"After joining NCIS, she built her reputation as the agency's premier forensic psychologist. Unlike the other agents, she can second guess and challenge Gibbs, so there will be friction but also mutual respect," it teases.

But while there's a new officer for fans to get to know, there's another who's officially retired from duty – despite only joining the series at the beginning of its 14th season.

Yep, Jennifer Esposito recently confirmed that Agent Alexandra Quinn is no more, and that that cliffhanger might never be resolved.

"It was a great experience," that actress said in a statement. "I could not have asked for a better opportunity than to work with the NCIS cast and producers."
