Nebraska Police Pay Tribute to Service Horse With Retirement Treats

Police in Omaha, Nebraska, bid farewell to a police horse retiring after three years of service by throwing him a party at the city’s equine facilities on Thursday, September 21.

Officers at the Omaha Police Department fed 18-year-old Blaze a cake made of carrots, apples and whipped cream. Police say tender hooves, worsened by walking on pavements, are the cause of his retirement.

Speaking to local media, Blaze’s former colleague Officer Nathan Weller said the horse was “a rock” for the department. "There was not really a whole lot that could scare him. He’d be the strong horse that the other horses would look at in a crowd and know they were going to be OK,” Waller said.
