Sonya Rebecchi and Mark Brennan have tragically lost their baby in a devastating Neighbours episode.

The upsetting storyline twist was revealed in the closing moments of Wednesday's visit to Erinsborough, which saw Sonya (Eve Morey) rushed to hospital amid fears for her unborn child.

Sonya was devastated to start suffering contractions after two huge revelations about her husband Toadie and Fake Dee Bliss, who are currently both in London in a special week for the Aussie soap.

First of all, distraught Sonya realised that Toadie must have fallen back in love with "Dee" after an ill-fated Skype call led to her accidentally watching them sleeping together.

Shortly after the cheating scandal, Mark paid a visit to break the big news that "Dee" is actually a total fraud – something Toadie also discovered just moments after sleeping with her, in the worst timing ever.

The stress of the situation was all far too much for Sonya as she suffered contractions and was rushed off for emergency medical attention at hospital.

Although Sonya and Mark were encouraged when they were told their baby girl had a strong heartbeat and there was every chance it was a false alarm, the situation ultimately had a terrible outcome for all concerned.

Just as Steph Scully was trying to comfort Mark in the hospital corridor, David Tanaka came outside to deliver the heartbreaking news: "I'm so sorry. As you know, we were monitoring the baby on CTG and we're no longer picking up a heartbeat. The baby hasn't made it."

Sonya agreed to carry a baby for Mark and Steph late last year, as the couple were unable to have children of their own.

Sonya donated one of her own eggs as part of the process, but the situation became a whole lot more complicated when Mark and Steph split up. This led Mark to agree that he'd bring up the child as a single father, with Sonya keen to be involved too.

With some of Neighbours' best-loved characters in complete turmoil after a gripping few weeks of drama, there's sure to be even more unmissable episodes ahead.

How will Sonya and Mark deal with their devastating loss? How will Toadie react to not being there when Sonya needed him the most? And is there any way forward for the Rebecchi marriage?
