It was the end of an era for Neighbours' Rebecchi family on UK screens today (April 28) as Dipi and Shane both said their farewells to Ramsay Street.

The couple, who recently reunited following a severe crisis in their marriage, waved goodbye to their loved ones and headed off to start a new life in Sydney.

Here's a quick recap of what we know about Shane and Dipi's Neighbours departures – and what happens next.

Sharon Johal, who plays Dipi, filmed her final scenes for Neighbours in December. As with most Neighbours departures, her exit from the cast was initially kept under wraps to avoid spoiling future storylines.

In early March, when Dipi's exit episode was getting closer on Australian screens, Sharon made the announcement that she had left the long-running soap.

Addressing her fans on Instagram, Sharon explained: "It is with sadness I've announced today that I will be leaving @neighbours.

"Some of you may have seen this coming, but to be honest I put the motions into play over a year ago. A number of reasons brought me to here, however inevitably my ambition for growth has ultimately been the decider.

"I am so excited for what the future holds. As you might've read, I'm already shadow-directing on Neighbours with Tenika [Smith] and look forward to telling stories from my unique perspective, gaze and experience – whether that be behind the camera, in front of it, in writing or production, I intend to make positive impact."

Sharon joined the cast of Neighbours in April 2017, so bowed out after a four-year run.

Since her final scenes aired in Australia, Sharon has also spoken out about her experiences of racism at Neighbours.

After Wentworth star Shareena Clanton and Nate Kinski actor Meyne Wyatt both revealed details of racism on set, Sharon made her own statement and called for changes behind the scenes. Her full statement can be read here.

Production company FremantleMedia has ordered an independent legal investigation and a separate cultural review in response to the ongoing controversy.

While Dipi has now left the regular cast and will be taken out of the opening titles from Thursday's UK episode (April 29), it's not the last that fans will see of her.

Neighbours' executive producer Jason Herbison confirmed at the end of March that plans were already in the works for Dipi to make a return for a guest appearance.

Storyline details for Dipi's next appearance won't be revealed until nearer the time.

Although it was widely rumoured that Nicholas Coghlan had left the Neighbours cast after he filmed his final scenes in December, his departure from the show wasn't announced officially until the end of March.

As Nicholas isn't currently active on social media, he hasn't made a statement about his exit from the show.

Speaking recently, Neighbours boss Jason Herbison told TV Tonight: "From their opening scenes four years ago, Sharon and Nick were completely committed to their characters and performance.

"They embraced some really challenging storylines as well as capturing loads of fun moments, which have endeared them to the Neighbours audience here and in the UK."

Nicholas has also departed the regular cast and will be removed from the Neighbours opening titles from Thursday.

When Shane's exit was announced, Neighbours producer Jason Herbison said that the door would remain open for him to return in the future.

He said: "While Shane and Dipi are moving on for now, like all families on Ramsay Street, the door is always open."

Shane is not expected to be part of the upcoming plot which sees Dipi make a short return.

While her parents have waved goodbye, Yashvi Rebecchi has made the decision to stick around on Ramsay Street with her boyfriend Ned Willis. However, there are still some issues for the couple to sort out.

Ned was hurt recently when he discovered that Yashvi had been in touch with her aunt Mishti Sharma about a potential work move to Sydney. Yashvi clarified that she only would have moved if Ned was willing to come with her.

Next week, this issue continues to cause problems as Ned wants to talk things through, but a distracted Yashvi keeps avoiding the conversation.

When Ned proves persistent, Yashvi is finally willing to talk and the pair try to clear the air together.

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 5.30pm on Channel 5 (UK) and weekdays at 6.30pm on 10 Peach (Australia).
