Residents have lost their fight to stop a new house in multiple occupation being granted permission down a congested Leek street. Despite seven letters of objection and a petition signed by 35 individuals from nearby streets, councillors at Staffordshire Moorlands District Council unanimously approve the application.

Now the approved HMO will see the five bed house on Cruso Street converted for seven single occupancy rooms. However a number of residents have raised concerns over parking and highway safety issues.

Additional Leek Town Council despite not objecting did reiterate concerns over parking issues in the area. However Staffordshire County Council as the highways authority said the proposals “will not have a severe effect on the highway.”

An email was sent by the applicant over bin storage stating that it would be provided on site, however was not included in the plans. Councillors included a condition to the application stating that it would be provided.

Concerns over anti-social behaviour was raised by Councillor Lyn Swindlehurst, however she said she was more concerned about the impact of ASB on new residents and stated she was minded to abstain. However, planning officers advised that it was not a sustainable reason for refusal.

Councillor Keith Hoptroff told councillors: “Although it’s in my ward I’ve got no problems with the application as it stands. There is a big issue with parking but that’s a long standing problem, it’s something I need to take further with the county council to see if we can get some double yellows down there.”
