Neighbours' New Theme Tune: Singer Sought

Fans of long-running Australian soap Neighbours are being given the chance to become the voice of the show's new theme tune.

Viewers can enter a competition on the Neighbours: Remixed website before the deadline of March 1.

The best five singers will be selected by Channel 5, before a public vote is launched to find the most popular British voice.

The winner will then fly to Melbourne to compete against an Australian contender, before judges award one of them the chance to record the new Neighbours theme tune.

Ryan Moloney, who plays Toadfish, has made a video containing some tips for those planning to enter.

The music for the Neighbours theme tune was composed by British songwriter Tony Hatch, while his wife Jackie Trent wrote the lyrics.

To date, six different versions of the theme tune have been broadcast.

The current one features vocals by Australian singer Sandra de Jong.

The popular soap, set in Ramsay Street, was first broadcast on the Seven Network on March 18, 1985 and was created by TV executive Reg Watson.

Watson, an Australian, decided to make his show appeal to both Australian and British viewers, having the witnessed the success of Crossroads and Coronation Street in the UK.
