Neighbours' season finale is a major throwback to 30 years ago

Neighbours spoilers follow.

The year came to a dramatic close in Neighbours as Terese Willis (Rebekah Elmaloglou) was left clinging for dear life to the roof of Lassiters – but this is a cliffhanger that long-term fans may have felt a little déjà vu while watching.

The drama unfolded when a drunk Terese retreated to the rooftop pool area to be on her own and to drown her sorrows.

Harlow Robinson (Jemma Donovan) soon found her, and it was not long before the pair were once again coming to blows.

Harlow had just got some dirt on Glen Donnelly (Richard Huggett) from a PI and was ready to share all she had learned with Terese before the argument kicked off.

The papers that contained all the secret Glen information wound up scattered over the complex. Terese lost her footing, and the year came to a close with her hanging on to the rooftop and doing her best not to fall to her death.

Watching her from the ground were Glen and Paul (Stefan Dennis) and for the former, it was a stark reminder of the event that caused his life to fall apart back in Christmas 1991.

Back then, Glen was the one hanging on after he slipped on the same hotel roof while fixing a banner for Paul that had come loose.

While we hope that Terese will be able to get herself to safety, Glen was not so lucky, and he tumbled to the ground in front of some horrified witnesses.

Glen was misdiagnosed with paraplegia and he was nearly conned by Paul out of being able to sue. He thought his family had sided with his half-brother, and then he vanished – staying away from the Robinson clan until earlier this year.

His relationship with Paul remains fractured now, so could Glen seeing such a stark reminder of his accident cause their rift to get even worse and, more importantly, will Terese manage to climb her way to safety?

The writer of the episode, Shane Isheev, revealed that the moment was very much a callback to that dramatic 1991 finale, taking to Twitter to say that he "couldn't resist" the callback. He also teased 2022 saying "It's a big week, but not as big as the year ahead".

Despite the unmissable drama, this was not originally set to be the finale and the dramatic ending was added after some changes to the schedule meant the planned year-ender would now air in 2022.

But what was planned to be the end-of-year event will still go ahead – and we think it is set to go down a storm with viewers when we get to see it play out in January.

Neighbours is now on its Christmas break and will return on Monday, January 3, 2022.

In a first for the long-running soap, the UK will pull ahead of Australia at the end of its first week back. 10 Peach, the home for the show in Oz, dropped down to four episodes a week a few weeks ago – the current plan for Channel 5 is to keep the five-episodes-per-week schedule.

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 6pm on Channel 5 (UK) and Mondays to Thursdays at 6.30pm on 10 Peach (Australia).
