The Wrong Girl actress Christie Whelan Browne has joined the cast of Neighbours in a guest role.

Browne is best known for her work in Aussie drama The Wrong Girl, as well as starring in 2010 film I Love You Too opposite Game of Thrones icon Peter Dinklage, but now she's heading to Ramsay Street to portray new character Scarlett.

Speaking to TV Week about her new and exciting role in the soap world, Christie explained that audiences will learn "early on" that Scarlett is a "very complex" character.

"She has a clear agenda when it comes to one of the male characters and she goes to extreme lengths to get what she wants," Christie added.

"She's had her own pain and struggles, so while sometimes her actions will leave viewers shaking their heads, hopefully they can have sympathy for her too."

The actress also told the publication that she'd auditioned for the soap "a couple of times in the past" without success, so how has she found joining the ranks of such a popular and longstanding show?

"It's so surreal," she noted. "Sitting at my first read-through and Susan Kennedy [Jackie Woodburne] is sitting opposite me saying lines – it was nostalgia and excitement rolled into one.

"My younger self would never have believed I'd be on this show. It's pretty awesome."

Christie isn't the only new face heading to Erinsborough in the near future, as former cast member Jason Donovan's daughter Jemma is also gearing up for her Neighbours debut.

Jemma will play the "whip-smart, diplomatic and complex" character of Harlow Robinson, and the actress shared that she was "so happy and very honoured" to be a part of the soap.

"The timing was also perfect because since my previous role on Spotless in 2015, I stopped going to auditions and acting because I wanted to finish my schooling, get my A-levels, and see what I wanted to do after that," she added.

"So it's great how everything has fallen into place."

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 5.30pm on Channel 5 (UK) and 6.30pm on 10 Peach (Australia).
