Neighbours star Cameron Robbie on Jesse's secret

Neighbours spoilers follow for UK viewers.

Neighbours star Cameron Robbie has spoken to Digital Spy about his character Jesse Porter's secret hidden agenda.

This week's episodes on Channel 5 have revealed that Jesse is a secret spy who's working for the Quill family in a ruthless plot against Lassiters.

Jesse is feeding back confidential information to the Quills, who own a rival hotel group, in order to give them a competitive edge over Lassiters.

The sneaky character has been appearing on our screens for a few months, but has only recently started to play a more central role in storylines ahead of this plot twist.

Addressing the slow-burn introduction, Cameron told Digital Spy: "I think it's a pretty fun character development. For fans of the show, I think it would be something kind of odd to watch, like: 'Who is this guy and why is he just always popping up?'

"I'm pretty amused by that thought and think the pay-off is a bit more fun."

He continued: "This is not exactly Jesse's own masterplan. Jesse is in a position where he feels he has to do what he's being told.

"Why is that, though? Well, I hope that's a fun development for the storyline for everyone.

"Jesse is feeling a lot of pressure on himself. He puts the weight of the world on his shoulders while he's doing his best to please others. But at the same time, he's a little lost. A lot of it is serving an end goal, but also taking opportunities as they come along.

"Jesse is a little lost and really running from his own demons at times. I think ultimately, deep down, he is a good person but is choosing to ignore his moral compass on these matters. He's become so good at lying, and I think he lies to himself that he's not really doing anything wrong."

Jesse has grown particularly close to Harlow Robinson in recent weeks, even posing as her fake boyfriend when she needed help to fool her grandfather Paul.

However, in next week's Channel 5 episodes, Harlow and Roxy Willis discover the unsettling truth about Jesse and the Quills and report it back to Paul.

Paul immediately settles on a counter-plan, suggesting that Harlow should feed Jesse bogus information as revenge for his scheming.

Cameron continued: "It's tricky, as Jesse is enjoying the friendship he's making with Harlow, but at the same time, it's a convenient way for him to get as close as he can to the inner-workings of Lassiters.

"If he knew that Harlow had discovered the truth, the realisation of his actions really would come crashing down on him. He hasn't really been thinking about the consequences of his actions or who he might hurt in the process.

"I think the confidence Jesse gains in each small win really boosts his ego. He has fooled everyone for so long, so Paul's counter-plan wouldn't be on his radar."

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 5.30pm on Channel 5.
