Neighbours newcomer Christie Hayes has hinted at a change in the tense dynamic between Ebony Buttrose and her rival Chloe Brennan.

Ebony was seen turning nasty with Chloe in Friday's episode of the Aussie soap (June 14), warning her to stay away from Pierce Greyson.

Viewers know that Ebony is engaged to Pierce, but she's worried that Chloe (April Rose Pengilly) is getting too close to the rich businessman after their previous romantic connection.

Speaking to Digital Spy about the on-screen tensions, Christie explained: "I think that Ebony and Chloe are both very strong, honest women. They do have a tendency to want to fight over this one guy, so it should be fun to watch that unfold.

"I think there's a bit of a miscommunication and misunderstanding between them as well. As the storyline unfolds, you'll see that in a different life, these two would be friends.

"While they're not best friends by any means, they start working together for the greater good and an outcome they both want."

She continued: "I had a lot of fun working with April. I think she's a really good actress, really natural and she works really hard. She was very welcoming when I joined the show.

"I think people will either love or dislike watching Ebony and Chloe together. But hopefully even if you do have people disliking you, it means you've done something interesting."

Next week's episodes see Chloe grow increasingly suspicious over Ebony's motives around Pierce, fearing that she's a gold-digger.

Christie laughed: "Chloe might be onto something! But I'm protective of my character here, so I'm probably not the best person to ask about that.

"Looks can be deceiving and you should never judge a book by its cover. We'll have to wait and see.

"Ebony does a lot of things that some people might not really approve of, but as this storyline unfolds, we see why that is.

"There are moments where she's not being truthful in certain ways, but over time we understand why."

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 5.30pm on Channel 5 (UK) and 6.30pm on 10 Peach (Australia).
