Neighbours star Stefan Dennis has suggested that there may be some regrets over killing off Sonya Rebecchi.

Eve Morey, who played Sonya for nine years, left earlier this year as her character passed away in a heartbreaking cancer storyline. But it wasn't her choice to leave, and the decision to axe Sonya proved controversial at the time.

Last month, Morey earned two huge Logie Awards nominations – for Most Popular Actress and the prestigious Gold Logie.

Speaking to RadioTimes.com, Dennis – who plays Paul Robinson – said that the show bosses may be looking back at the decision differently with hindsight.

"I think in hindsight, they're now going, 'Oops!'," he said. "There is possibly some regret among the powers that be with regard to the decision, especially as Eve is shortlisted for the Gold Logie, which is a public vote.

"It was a big shock to the cast and took us a long time to get over – myself, Ryan Moloney, Alan Fletcher, and Jackie Woodburne marched to the office and said, 'You can't do this'. They explained it was out of their hands."

But Dennis added: "But then, Neighbours is an evolving show and it will move on.

"Eve will not be forgotten, and the lovely thing is, she's an acting coach on the show now, so we still get to see her and she's doing what she's very good at, which is mentoring people."

Morey recently said that she may not return to acting, despite her Logie nominations.

"My thought was moving away from acting and getting more into coaching. And I wanted to do stuff around intimacy co-ordination and things like that," she commented.

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 5.30pm on Channel 5 (UK) and 6.30pm on 10 Peach (Australia).
