Nell Mescal has released her third single, along with an accompanying video – you can see it below.

The Irish singer-songwriter follows the thoughtful indie folk of last year’s ‘Graduating’ and January’s ‘Homesick’ with ‘In My Head’, a slow-burning, quietly epic ballad. The video is directed by Mescal’s long-time collaborator Dora Paphides. Discussing the track, the Maynooth native said: “‘In My Head’ is a song about searching for a love you had in the past, a feeling you’re never sure you’ll find again so you seek comfort in relationships that are emotionally draining and one-sided.”

“It’s about thinking that it must always be your fault,” she went on, “and eventually leading to resentment towards the other person. We all have that person we look back on and miss, this track captures the moment they slip into your head”. The track was produced by Kai Bosch, and is streaming now via LAB Records.

Mescal, the younger sister of Oscar-nominated Aftersun star Paul, is gearing up for a summer of festivals in 2023; you can see her full dates below. Speaking to Rolling Stone UK for our February/March issue, she discussed using her brother as a sounding board for ideas during her writing process. “We’re both too similar, we’ll have exactly the same ideas and when I think it’s not great, I always think he’ll have the same reaction as me, which is daunting!” she said.

She also addressed the effect of Paul’s burgeoning Hollywood profile on her own nascent career. “I’ve been singing my whole life,” she explained. “Paul is incredible and it’s been amazing to see what’s happened for him in the past few years. People might come because of his name, but if they stay then it’s because they like the music.”
