An online appeal to help a pensioner find his lost walking stick - containing his wife’s ashes - has gone viral.

A Facebook post by Katie Brookes has been shared more than 60,000 times. It asks for everyone to try to locate the stick, which an elderly man accidentally left behind.

She doesn’t know his name, but shared a taxi with him from Liverpool.

During the journey, he told her how he used to take the stick everywhere until he misplaced it, travelling to Skelmersdale in Lancashire.

Her post reads: “I was in town and got talking to some old man who was talking about his wife who had passed away and he had her ashes put in his walking stick.

“He was telling us he lives in Skelmersdale and was getting a taxi from
Liverpool all the way there so felt sorry for this old man paying all that
money in a taxi so as Kirkby is half way there we put him in our taxi but
he left his walking stick.

"I’ve rang up the taxi firm to find out his address but they won’t give us
any details.

"We need to try and get this walking stick back to him as he’s going to be
devastated.

"The taxi firm said he didn’t get out at his home address he got out at
some alleyway.”

This morning (Monday) it had been shared 62,919 times.
