The Get Down has set an unwanted record at Netflix.

It has become the streaming giant's first show to be cancelled after only one season, which was released in two parts, with its first season hit by delays and the departure of original showrunner Shawn Ryan.

Reportedly one of the most expensive TV shows ever, The Get Down marked Baz Luhrmann's first TV project, and he's spoken about its cancellation in a lengthy Facebook post.

"I wanted to speak to you with an open heart and just acknowledge how humbled and moved that not only I, but all who have given so much to this production, have been by your passion and commitment to see the next chapter of The Get Down go back into production in the immediate future," he noted.

Luhrmann went on to explain that taking a more central role on the show meant he had to put off directing a movie for at least two years.

"It kills me that I can't split myself into two and make myself available to both productions. I feel so deeply connected to all those who I have worked and collaborated with on this remarkable experience," he explained.

Luhrmann added that he hasn't ruled out returning to the world of The Get Down in some way in the future, but said that "the simple truth is, I make movies", adding: "As for the real future of the show, the spirit of The Get Down, and the story it has begun to tell... it has its own life."

The Get Down joins the likes of Marco Polo, Hemlock Grove and Bloodline to be cancelled by Netflix, but those shows all ran for more than one season.

Its first season ended up running for 11 episodes, two short of the 13 that were expected when the show was announced in 2015.
