Netflix's Lost in Space isn't actually a gritty reboot

From Digital Spy

The trailers for Netflix's Lost in Space might make it seem like it's a bleak and gritty reimagining of the brightly-coloured and campy '60s melodrama. But that's not actually the case!

This Friday, fans will get their first chance to see the new adventures of the the Robinson family, who become stranded light years away from home in their ship, the Jupiter 2.

Key to this revival, according to cast member Maxwell Jenkins (aka Will Robinson), is that "family" is an "important element", as in the original show.

"There's not that much that I can watch with my 11-year-old that I also really want to watch," Molly Parker (aka Maureen Robinson) told Digital Spy. "I do think that this lives in that world."

"I think, because it's a family show, it will possibly split people - [some will think] it's just not dark or depressing enough, and then other people who are hung up on the original series will think too serious," Toby Stephens (aka John Robinson) predicted.

"This version is rooted in something that's real. It is sci-fi but, at its heart, but you've got this thing that's keeping it real."

This dichotomy is part of the Lost in Space writing team's plan of attack to make this a "reimagining" of the classic show's premise, rather than a "fourth season" of the original - Mina Sundwall (aka Penny Robinson) notes.

"We all appreciate the original and what it meant at the time," Taylor Russell (aka Judy Robinson) stressed. "It's incredible, but it's not necessarily what our show is now. They're both very different entities."

"We had to make sure we were respectful of the original show," Maxwell Jenkins agreed. "I feel like we were able to create something new but also something the original fans, I hope, will like...But it will retain the family feel of the original and is not the "gritty reboot" that some fans had feared."

Lost In Space is on Netflix from Friday (April 13). Watch a trailer below, and check out our review by clicking here.
