It has been revealed that Netflix is in discussion with director and producer David Fincher about a third series of the thriller TV show Mindhunter.

A source told Small-screen: “All I can really tell you about Mindhunter is that conversations between Netflix and Fincher are ongoing. They are discussing the possibility of bringing the show back for a third season.”

“It’s still very early days, but Fincher sounds more upbeat about the project,” they added.

It comes after the show was put on “indefinite hold” by Netflix in January 2020.

Lead actors Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv were also released from their contracts.

“[David] may revisit Mindhunter again in the future, but in the meantime felt it wasn’t fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own,” a spokesperson from Netflix said at the time.

In a 2019 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, actor Holt McCallany (who plays Bill Tench) said of his first meeting with the producer: “‘Listen, are you ready to do this for five seasons? Because even if I f*** it up, it’s gonna go five seasons, and I don’t intend to f*** it up,

“So I’d like to think that we will continue, for as long as David is intrigued by telling this particular story.” he said.

However, many things have changed in a year. Fincher has been particularly busy after signing an exclusive four-year development deal with Netflix.

His 2020 drama Mank, also released by the streaming service, received 10 Academy Awards nominations, including best picture and best director.

In October 2020, a Netflix spokesperson hinted that Mindhunter season three could happen. He said: “Maybe in five years.”
