Netflix has unveiled the first footage from its upcoming animated series Castlevania, and it looks every bit as brilliant as the game that inspired it.

The series is described as a dark medieval fantasy that follows the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont Clan as they try to save Eastern Europe from Dracula – and the trailer hints at a very bloody, explosive series as they fight towards that goal.

"There is a darkness upon the land," we're told. "A saviour is needed."

Castlevania is based on the series of video games created and developed by Konami starting in the 1980s. The games were known for borrowing their source material from classic horror, including Medusa, Universal's The Mummy and, of course, Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Netflix pays homage to Castlevania's '80s gaming origins at the start of the trailer, too, by loading the series up on the Nintendo NES, Netflix cartridge and all.

Two seasons of Castlevania have been planned by Netflix so far, with the first launching on July 7, 2017 and season two following in 2018.

The animated series comes from Adventure Time's Frederator Studios, and it's been written by author and comic book writer Warren Ellis, who also serves as executive producer alongside Kevin Kolde, Fred Seibert and Adi Shankar.

Castlevania Season 1, Part 1 premieres on Netflix with four 30-minute episodes on July 7.
