From Cosmopolitan

If you didn't already know, Ryan Murphy can do no wrong in our eyes. He's practically sent from the TV gods. As well as giving us the likes of Glee and Scream Queens (love!), he's also behind Netflix's Pose and the new Hollywood.

But that's not the only thing he's got in the pipeline with the streaming service, after Netflix announced he was tied to a Once Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest prequel, Ratched. Here's everything you need to know about the spin off of the classic, from release date to the all star cast and storyline.

What is Netflix's Ratched about?

Based on the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey, Netflix is reviving the classic character of Nurse Ratched for a 2020 version. Nurse Ratched is heartless and cold, and prides herself as the head nurse of a psychiatric ward as oppressive and dehumanised, and this story will aim to find out why. Beginning in 1947, we'll follow Ratched's evolution from nurse to full-fledged monster, as well as journey through the mental health care system.

Netflix say of the new show:

"[Nurse Ratched is] a character from the classic 1962 novel named One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and the movie that followed thirteen years later in 1975. With that said, the character has also popped up in ABC’s Once Upon A Time. The series is set to be an origin story of sorts taking us back to before Nurse Ratched had evolved to the monster by exploiting people in the mental health care system."

Who will star in Netflix's Ratched?

Now this is where things get really good. American Horror Story's Sarah Paulson will take on the lead role as Nurse Mildred Ratched, Cynthia Nixon will play Gwendolyn Briggs, Judy Davis takes on the role of Nurse Betsy Bucket, Sharon Stone is Lenore Osgood, Jon Jon Briones stars as Dr. Richard Hanover and Finn Wittrock will play Edmund Tolleson. Corey Stoll, Sophie Okonedo and Vincent D’Onofrio round out the cast.

When will Netflix's Ratched be released?

Ratched is coming to Netflix on 18th September. "... It’s a big fall show," Ryan Murphy previously told Deadline. "It’s a feminist psychological horror show. We’ve been done with that for a while. It’s the performance of Sarah Paulson’s life."

Anything else I should know about Netflix's Ratched?

The story will be set 20 years prior to the events of the book and classic film starring Jack Nicholson, but has potential to cover multiple seasons. Sarah Paulson revealed to The Hollywood Reporter, "I don’t have this massive hairdo that is sort of iconic that Louise Fletcher had (referencing the actress's hair in the 1975 film). This is how we discover who the woman was and how she came to be. Ideally, by the time we’re in season four, we’re in that story of the Cuckoo’s Nest."

What has Ryan Murphy said about Ratched?

Ryan has kept fans on their toes with some serious teasing. "I feel like Nurse Ratched is sort of a shorthand for barbarism. She became almost like a catchphrase for any sort of institutional abuse of power," he told Vanity Fair.

"What was interesting was trying to create an emotional character from a reputation that’s very cold… trying to figure out every little detail about her childhood, her relationships, her sexuality. Because when people think of Ratched, they think of her as shutoff and cruel and uncaring."
