Netflix's newest documentary series Tiger King is provocative, bizarre, shocking… and its story might not be over.

The seven-part series tells the story of big cat zoo owner Joe Exotic and his arrest over murder-for-hire allegations – but filmmakers Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin also expand the story to explore other owners of big cat parks and controversial conservationist Carole Baskin.

While Netflix hasn't yet made any announcement about Tiger King returning for more episodes, its producers have revealed to Entertainment Weekly that Joe Exotic's case is still developing now that he has filed a $94 million lawsuit.

"To be continued," co-director Rebecca Chaiklin teased. "I mean, yes we have a crazy amount of footage and it's a story that's still unfolding.

"We're not sure yet, but there could be a follow-up on this story because there's a lot that's still unfolding in it, and it'll be just as dramatic and just as colourful as what has unfolded these past few years."

Tiger King has come under fire from conservationist Carole Baskin, whose motives for opposing big cat zoo owners are questioned in the documentary series.

"They did not care about truth. The unsavoury lies are better for getting viewers," she wrote in her blog.

In their interview with EW, Chaiklin and Goode argued that there is "a lot of hypocrisy" with Carole Baskin because she was also shown keeping her tigers in captivity.

"I think that what people should take away from the show and what one should do to protect tigers, in particular, big cats, is to support more programs in the wild," Goode suggested.

Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness is available to stream worldwide on Netflix.
