Nevada Couple Hold Virtual Wedding After Coronavirus Cancellation

A couple in Reno, Nevada, who cancelled their wedding ceremony due to COVID-19 came up with a novel way of both tying the knot and celebrating with family and friends without anybody leaving their homes – a virtual wedding.

Reno residents Sierra Ozaki and Maxwell Luarca were originally due to get married at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa in Reno on March 21 but cancelled it after a number of guests were unable to travel due to the outbreak of COVID-19.

The couple’s nuptials were one of countless cancelled birthdays, trips, weddings and other big gatherings planned for the year. This couple, however, opted for a modern solution.

Sierra and Maxwell held their wedding ceremony on March 21 in their Reno home and broadcast it to 70 friends and family, watching it on Zoom from the comfort of their living rooms.

Footage shared by Sierra’s cousin Jordan, who lives in Honolulu, shows the couple tying the knot.

Writing about the unusual wedding ceremony on Facebook, Sierra said she still got to use all of her flowers and “had the privilege of wearing Grandma Shirley’s Niihau shells and Grandma Harriet’s pearl ring.”

“We still shoved cake in each other’s faces, had the toasts, had our dream wedding dinner (Chick-Fil-A) and still had so much love surrounding us. Mahalo to our families for making last night possible,” she wrote. Credit: Jordan Ozaki via Storyful
