It’s something most of us prefer not to dwell on – but a new app uses daily activity records to predict exactly when a user will die.

The free Gero Lifespan app monitors daily steps and hours of sleep and promises to ‘Squeeze the ultimate meaning out of your activity data!’

The free iPhone app is available now, but requires a Facebook login – and offers life expectancy estimates to within 1/10 of a year.

It was created by researchers at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, who analysed physical activity records from the 2003 to 2006 US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).

The researchers trained a neural network to predict the mortality risk and biological age of wearers, using a week’s activity measurements.

Peter Fedichev of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology says, ‘Life and health insurance programs have already begun to provide discounts to their users based on physical activity monitored by fitness wristbands.

‘We report that AI can be used to further refine the risks models. Combination of aging theory with the most powerful modern machine learning tools will produce even better health risks models to mitigate longevity risks in insurance, help in pension planning, and contribute to upcoming clinical trials and future deployment of anti-aging therapies.’
