A newborn baby has been abandoned near a busy main road in east London - prompting a search for the child’s mother from the Metropolitan Police.

Officers said the child, a baby boy, was found in a grey babygrow in Dalston, Hackney, close to the busy Kingsland road at around 11:40am.

They added the child, who is now being cared for at an east London hospital, appeared to have been born outside of a hospital environment.

In a direct appeal to the child’s mother Inspector Kevin Weeks, who is leading the investigation, appealed for her to come forward for her own wellbeing.

”I would urge the mother of this baby to make contact either with police, your local hospital or GP surgery and let us know that you are safe and can receive any medical care you may need”, he said.

“Our primary focus is to ensure the wellbeing of both you and your child”.

“I would also urge anyone who has information that could help us to reunite this baby with his mother to come forward.”
