Baby found in wheelie bin with umbilical cord attached 'doing well'

A newborn baby found in a wheelie bin in Grimsby is "doing well" and her mother has been traced.

Grimsby Live said they understand the baby - who still had his umbilical cord attached - is doing well in hospital after East Midlands Ambulance Service paramedics arrived at the scene at about 5pm on Sunday.

He was discovered in a bin filled with grass cuttings on the town's Nunsthorpe estate on Sunday afternoon.

The child's mother has been traced and was also taken to hospital.

The boy was discovered inside a brown garden waste bin on Langton Close.

A resident reportedly heard crying coming from the bin and, after opening the lid, discovered the baby among grass cuttings.

One resident said: "It is just desperately sad. It’s such a relief the little boy seems to be ok and your heart goes out to the mum. She needs love and support and hopefully something good will still come from this."

Another told GrimsbyLive: "We saw the boy being taken away by the ambulance crew. We all heard the cries. It is shocking for the woman who heard the cries and found him in the bin. We are all in pieces about this."

Humberside Police and East Midlands Ambulance Service were called to the scene.

Officers have conducted house to house inquiries and interviewed residents.

One resident said of the child's mother: "We only hope she gets the care she needs and her baby."

An East Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We received a call at 4.58pm on 19 June, to a private address in Grimsby. The caller reported a medical emergency.

"We sent two crewed ambulances and two patients were taken to Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital.”

In a statement issued on Sunday, Humberside Police said: "Officers are in attendance at a property on Winchester Avenue following reports of concerns for safety earlier this evening.

"Assistance has been provided to those concerned. There are no issues or risks to the wider community."
