Newcastle International Airport is celebrating after being crowned as the best in the UK and Ireland at the 2024 Travel Industry Awards. The airport has been recognised for its 'exceptional customer service' and 'operational excellence' as part of the awards.

The Travel Industry Awards, organised by national trade magazine Travel Trade Gazette, are voted for by leaders across the industry. The Airport of the Year award is one of the industry's most respected accolades, and Newcastle Airport bosses are feeling very proud of their team.

Nick Jones, Chief Executive at Newcastle International Airport said: "We are delighted to be named UK and Irish Airport of the Year by the Travel Trade Gazette.

"This is a tremendous achievement for our entire team and partners, who work tirelessly to ensure we continue to deliver a world-class experience for our passengers and maintain the highest standards across all areas of our business."

The Airport's credentials for winning such a prize are demonstrated by it ranking in the top three of all UK airports for on-time performance in 2023, and it has also been praised for its commitment to supporting trade partners and its work to promote equality, diversity and inclusion.

This comes after over £20m was invested into the terminal to improve the overall passenger experience. This included the redevelopment of the security area and the implementation of next generation security scanners, with 98% of passengers passing through security in under 10 minutes so far this year.

The airport also fully refurbished all of the catering outlets in the departure lounge, and opened Aspire’s first three-tier lounge product. The Airport’s customer satisfaction scores continue to be some of the highest on record, with the Passenger Assistance team recently being given the top rating of ‘Very Good’ in the CAA Accessibility Audit.

This winter will see another £20m of investment by the business, with a £17m project to resurface its 2,300m runway and adjoining taxiways commencing in November. A further £3m will be invested in additional improvements to the departure lounge experience and retail outlets.
