The Newcastle Christmas Market is known for its popular food scene - from festive paramos, Yorkshire pudding wraps, and bratwurst, to every possible flavour hot chocolate and not forgetting the mulled wine.

The city-centre set up, which this year is larger than last, has transformed Old Eldon Square into a magical Christmas Village complete with selfie stations and a chance to meet Santa. Whilst the 'North Pole' igloos around Monument are a new edition for Christmas 2024.

So, after having a good look around what this years stalls had to offer, ChronicleLive decided to see if we could make three meals - each including a different main, dessert and a drink - for £20 or under.

Starting off with local breakfast-in-a-bao-bun - and one of my personal favourites - Pablo Eggsgobao. The giant bao, complete with a hash brown, melty cheese topped with egg, siracha and a tangy sauce starts at only £5 for the OG Veggie.

Those wanting to add a sausage patty will pay £6.50. Or opt for a vegan bao instead for £6.66. And while there why not try the hash box too, dusted with the secret 'crack powder' and perfect to dip into some canny hot sauce.

Next onto a drink - it wouldn't be a Christmas market without hot chocolate and one stall in particular is selling every possible flavour it seems. The Mulled Wine and Hot Chocolate stand right next to Monument is offering Danish Pastry, Werther's Original and Toffee popcorn hot chocolate to name a few, each priced at £5.50.

As for a dessert, The brownie bar is selling a slice of the delicious baked chocolate treat for only £3.50 (or 4 for £12 if you want to indulge).

The second option main is Geordie bangers. The family owned business that has already became a staple of Newcastle's famous Grainger Market makes for a perfect and tasty lunch option.

Customers can opt for the original artisan gourmet pork banger dog priced at £5, or load for an extra £1 load with jalapenos, crispy onions and gherkins.

Moving onto something sweet, La Petite Crêperie, French-owned local crepe business is selling the traditional and delicious crepes in lemon, cinnamon or butter and sugar from £5. Those wanting to up their flavour game can try pistachio cream or cookies and cream at £7, and extras such as mini marshmallows or Biscoff crumbs for an added £1.

Then if you're after an extra kick, the staple Christmas drink - a mulled wine - is of course on offer at the Christmas Market. This year the stall not only boasts the classic, but new alternatives like rose and spiced apple are also up for grabs at £6.50 each.

Finally, for option three we headed over to Zenobia. Despite being the most expensive of the three mains at £10, the Arabian street food however packs a punch when it comes to flavour.

Chicken shawarma, shish kebab, lamb kofta, falafel and grilled halloumi wraps are all freshly made and served with side salad, fries and sauces. Soft drinks are available too at £2 to wash it down if you don't fancy taking on another a hot tipple.

For the last dessert and sticking with the French theme, Sweet Tart is selling a full list of flavoured macarons, three for £6.90. 'Handcrafted with love' customers can enjoy the classic hazelnut, strawberry or vanilla bean or even sample bubble-gum and rose water flavours. Those looking for Christmas gift inspiration for sweet tooth lovers can pick up a box of 12 for £24.80

And that completes our round-up of three different meals each under £20 to try at this years Newcastle Christmas Market. The wooden chalet-style stalls serving food and selling gifts will be running until Sunday, December 22.
