It's almost that time of year again.

The decorations are going up as people prepare for the Christmas festivities. Teessiders travel across the country to visit Christmas markets, including Newcastle and York which are only around one hour away.

Newcastle city centre is currently undergoing a transformation into a winter wonderland as preparations for this year's bigger and better Christmas market are in full swing. Old Eldon Square is being decked out for a festive village, complete with igloos, a fairground carousel and a giant Christmas tree.

Stalls around the Monument are also being set up, ready for the annual Moosenwirt alpine pop-up to open its doors when Newcastle Christmas Market launches on Saturday. An official red ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for that morning to celebrate what promises to be a significantly larger market this year.

Following Tuesday night's switch-on of the city's Christmas lights, the whole scene will be looking like a seasonal delight. Local company EVNT Inspirations has been collaborating with Newcastle City Council and business improvement district company NE1 Ltd on the new-look market.

They're introducing new family activities and experiences including Elf Workshops, Santa Storytime Sessions and a performance stage. Of course, it's the stalls selling street food, drink and gifts that draw in the crowds.

This year, there's a focus on local products, with some emerging brands from across the city and wider region being featured during the market's run. Over 35 traditional stalls will be hosted by local traders, including Wylam Brewery and Newcastle Gin company, reports Chronicle Live.

For the first time, city department stalls Fenwick and John Lewis will also be represented. Here's a list of traders who will be setting up their stalls around the Monument, although there may be some changes during the run. Some stalls will also be located in Old Eldon Square.

The market will open daily from 10am until 8pm and 5pm on Sundays, running until December 22.

The nearby Grainger Market will be going all-out for Christmas too, with Sunday openings to come in December, free crafts and choir performances. City council leader Coun Karen Kilgour said the new Christmas Village and combination of markets amongst the city celebrations makes for "a vibrant Christmas offer" which "is not only fantastic for local people it also attracts visitors to the city and provides opportunities for local businesses too."

She added: "This can only be good for Newcastle as a whole and everyone who lives here as it strengthens our economy, making our city a better place to live”. Ben Whitfield, director of communications at NE1 Ltd, said: “Let the Christmas festivities commence!

"The unveiling of Fenwick’s Christmas window at the start of the month and the Christmas lights switch-on heralds the start of the city’s celebrations and the excitement is building." He said there is a huge appetite for Newcastle to become a major seasonal destination and added: "We are committed to boosting the city’s Christmas offer and have great aspirations for it to continue to expand and improve, to benefit the whole city.”
