Newcastle United are pushing to sign Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard after making a second loan bid for the England international but have been told the player would only consider a temporary move.

The Magpies had a loan offer for Lingard rejected by Manchester United at the start of the week but their interest did not go away and they have returned with a “generous and extremely tempting” offer for the 29-year-old.

Telegraph Sport understands that the offer is currently under consideration and that Lingard is tempted to make the switch, but wants to keep his options open and will not consider a permanent move at this stage

It is understood Manchester United were more receptive to allowing the player to leave this month if it was not a loan move, but those talks have not progressed after the idea was raised.

This is the last time that Manchester United will have a chance to sell Lingard before his contract expires at the end of the season and that encouraged Newcastle to consider a £12m bid to sign the player.

But those hopes disappeared when the Magpies hierarchy were told Lingard did not want to make that sort of commitment, although he has not yet ruled out a loan move until the end of the season.

Newcastle made an improved loan offer to Manchester United on Thursday although they do not know yet whether it will be accepted.

Sources at Old Trafford were continuing to argue on Thursday that they cannot let Lingad leave on loan as they need to ensure they have a large enough squad in case of more Covid infections

In a frantic day of negotiations behind the scenes, Newcastle’s hierarchy decided to make Lingard their priority target after experiencing more frustration in their pursuit of Seville centre back Diego Carlos.

The Brazilian is still keen to move to Newcastle but his Spanish club have still not agreed a fee with Newcastle and the talks have not progressed as quickly as the people on the English side of the table had hoped when Telegraph Sport revealed confidence was growing last weekend.

There have been claims, emanating from Spain, that another Premier League club has bid for Carlos and is offering more than the £30m Newcastle have said they are willing to pay.

The rival club’s name has not been revealed and Newcastle are refusing to give up on signing the centre back this month. It is believed they have already agreed personal terms and are still trying to thrash out a fee with Seville.
