A city centre pub will be embracing the season of goodwill this December with plans for a free Christmas party for older people.

Katie O’Brien's Irish tavern in Newcastle's Collingwood Street is inviting over-70s to sign up now for a chance to enjoy some festive spirit at the event on December 11 which is being planned as a treat for older members of the community who may not have a chance to get out and about or to socialise regularly.

It invites care homes to make contact too if they think the party may be something their residents might enjoy. And the social afternoon certainly will be out to bring cheer to guests with entertainment being served up alongside free drinks and snacks.

In a message on its social channels, the bar and live music venue says: "Christmas is a time for fun, celebrations together and giving. This Christmas at Katie O’Brien's we are hoping to do all three."

It says of its party plans: "We will open solely for them at 12noon for three hours for a drink or two (or three) and a sandwich, mince pie and a singalong." Complimentary tickets for the party are open to all members of the community over the age of 70.

It adds: "The tills will be turned off. It’s our opportunity to give something back to the local community who look after us throughout the year." Those interested in free tickets for the party, or who know of someone who might like to attend, are advised to act fast as the pub expects spaces to fill up quickly.

They can message the pub; email newcastle@katieobriensirishtaverns.com or call 0191 816 4300 to ask to add names to the guest list. Bookings will close on November 22 and confirmations will be sent out in due course, it says.

Responses on social media to the pub's party plans include "Love this"; "This is amazing!" and "Lovely idea".
