Newcastle United will be playing Premier League football next season after guaranteeing promotion from the Championship with a 4-1 win over Preston North End.

The Magpies, relegated last season after a six year spell in the top flight, ran out comfortable winners at St James’ Park despite cause for concern in a closely matched first half.

Argentine forward Ayoze Perez gave Newcastle the lead after just seven minutes but Rafa Benitez’s men were soon pegged back, Jordan Hugill netting for Preston moments after Aleksandar Mitrovic had been denied a penalty.

However Chelsea loanee Christian Atsu was to provide the telling contribution moments before the break, slotting home after a break led by Isaac Hayden.

A red card for Paul Gallagher handed Matt Ritchie the chance to double Newcastle’s lead from the spot as the pre-season favourites for promotion eased their way back into the top flight, Perez adding another on 67 minutes.

Newcastle will join Brighton in the top flight, the Seagulls having secured their promotion last week.
