Newcastle see 'really impressive' wonderkid but players won't have been 'too pleased'

Eddie Howe has admitted that he was 'really impressed' by Nestory Irankunda - who caused Newcastle United real problems in the closing stages of the A-League All Stars' 8-0 friendly win.

Irankunda made his final appearance on home soil before joining Bayern Munich and the 18-year-old caught the eye during a late cameo at the Marvel Stadium as Newcastle's youngsters tired. Irankunda raced down the right flank to set up Apostolos Stamatelopoulos for the All-Stars' fifth goal and the rapid forward also had a big hand in his side's sixth just a few minutes later when he pulled the ball back to Bozhidar Kraev, who unselfishly teed up Jake Hollman.

The All-Stars went on to win the game 8-0 on a night the hosts' experience and quality told, but it was a teenager who Howe reserved some individual praise for.

"I thought he was really impressive," the Newcastle boss said. "I was aware of him before the game and know that he's off to Bayern.

"I certainly wish him well in that journey. It's an incredible football club to move to. It's a big step, but he showed he's got definite qualities today.

"I don't think our defenders will be too pleased to have seen him at that stage where they're tired and he's fresh. That was an awkward end of the game for us."

Irankunda has been directly involved in 14 goals for Adelaide United in the A-League this season and the youngster had been on Bayern Munich's radar for some time before the Bundesliga giants announced the deal last November.
