There will be big celebrations in Heaton this week as a hugely popular takeaway has taken home the Best Takeaway in the North East at a national awards, in its first year of business.

Opening up on Newton Road to huge fanfare in July 2023, with musicians performing as coloured flares filled the air outside, Wok India quickly established itself as a firm favourite with locals, thanks to it being one of the only restaurants in the area to serve up Indo-Chinese cuisine, a blend of Indian and Chinese food which sounds like the absolute dream and has gathered a whole host of great reviews, including one from ChronicleLive.

To make the shortlist for the English Curry Awards a year after opening is a massive deal, but Wok India went a step further than just being nominated, by clinching the Best Takeaway in the North East at the ceremony, which was held in at Grosvenor House in London’s glamorous Mayfair on November 17.

The accolade recognises Wok India’s innovative approach to takeaway dining, blending the bold flavours of Chinese cuisine with the vibrant spices of India—a fusion hugely popular across India and now capturing the taste buds of Newcastle.

Speaking about the win, Director Elahi Amin expressed gratitude to the team and the local community, saying: “We are honoured to be named Takeaway of the Year North East at the Asian Curry Awards. This award is a testament to our team’s hard work and passion for introducing a unique Indo-Chinese experience to Newcastle. The warm support we’ve received from the Heaton community has been incredible, and we’re thrilled to see this exciting fusion cuisine becoming a favourite here, just as it is in award to our loyal customers and our amazing staff who bring these bold flavours to life every day.”
