Newcastle transfer target drops 'very soon' hint as he speaks out after emotional scenes

Giorgi Mamardashvili has revealed that his future will be decided 'very soon' after the Valencia goalkeeper was heavily linked with a move to Newcastle United.

Newcastle have watched the Valencia shot-stopper on a number of occasions this season and the 23-year-old cut an emotional figure following his side's final game of the season at the Mestalla last week. Mamardashvili stared straight ahead at full-time as he sat with his back to one of his goal posts before the Georgia international got up, turned to the crowd, kissed the badge and slowly walked off the field.

Valencia, who are saddled with debt, look set to sign goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski on a free transfer from Rayo Vallecano. Although Dimitrievski could, in theory, provide competition as a back-up goalkeeper, interestingly, the North Macedonia international has been a number one in his own right in La Liga for three successive seasons now. Also it is worth noting that Valencia already have a number two in Jaume Domenech, who extended his contract just last month.

Mamardashvili previously came close to joining Bayern Munich last summer, when his entourage even looked at accommodation in the city, and the goalkeeper could yet be on the move a year on.

"My future will be clear very soon," he told Geo Team. "Now I don't think about anything else because I have an important tournament [Euro 2024] with Georgia ahead."

Newcastle do not currently have a sporting director, but the Magpies have carried on 'as normal' in preparation for the summer window. Dougie Freedman, who had been the frontrunner to replace Dan Ashworth, looks set to stay at Crystal Palace.
