Newcastle United to make late Alexander Isak decision for Fulham clash

Newcastle United will run late checks on Alexander Isak ahead of the trip to face Fulham on Saturday.

The Sweden international did not reappear for the second half at Molineux on Sunday because of an eye injury and has yet to be spotted training this week. And while Newcastle have not ruled out the ex-Real Sociedad striker for the encounter at Craven Cottage, the Magpies were sweating on his chances of being involved.

Isak did not get a great deal of service against Wolves before being substituted with an eye injury but since then there have been reports of a toe problem. Howe had said on Sunday: "It was his eye, but I’m not 100% sure what the issue was. I just knew he had to come off. We’ll find out more afterwards.

"I don’t know whether it’s serious or not, but we absolutely hope not. He’s such an important player for us."

Newcastle's options in attack already look like they are dwindling with Callum Wilson still out with a back injury suffered in pre-season. Howe opted to play Anthony Gordon as a false 9 on Sunday against Wolves with some success.

United now face a Fulham side that have spluttered a little bit this season, only winning one Premier League game from four against Leicester City. Despite coming back from behind at Preston North End in the Carabao Cup, the Cottagers lost 16-15 in an epic penalty shoot out with Marco Silva saying: "We can now focus on the Premier League until January in the FA Cup. Until it is the Premier League and you have to focus, the next one is the most important one."
