Newcastle United midfielder Jeff Hendrick has completed a season-long loan move to Championship club Sheffield Wednesday.

The Republic of Ireland international will spend the remainder of the campaign with the Owls after putting the finishing touches to the move to Hillsborough in the final hours of the summer transfer window.

Hendrick joined the Magpies from Burnley in the summer of 2020 and scored three goals in 27 appearances before joining Queens Park Rangers on loan during the second half of the 2021/22 season.

The former Derby County midfielder went on to spend last season with Reading as the Royals suffered relegation into League One. Hendrick has trained with United’s academy players since returning to Tyneside earlier this summer after Magpies manager Eddie Howe confirmed both he and fellow midfielder Isaac Hayden would be allowed to leave the club.

He said: “I had those conversations with the players last year about training away from the group, only so I could control the numbers I was working with. I don’t anticipate that changing to be honest.

“They’ve done very well and been great servants to the football club and we certainly respect them. But sometimes you need a clear break and focus on the players who will play a part in the season.”

Hendrick was not registered in time to feature in Wednesday’s visit to Leeds United on Saturday and will now make his Owls debut after the international break when Ipswich Town head to Hillsborough.
