Newcastle United 'hatch plan' to stop Liverpool signing Anthony Gordon
Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon was heavily linked with a move to Liverpool during the summer transfer window. The Reds had a quiet few months in the transfer market, but Gordon's name was at the very top of the rumour mill right until deadline day.
Liverpool decided to sign two players during the summer, with Federico Chiesa arriving from Juventus. Giorgi Mamardashvili has also been signed from Valencia but will spend the remainder of the season on loan with the La Liga outfit.
Gordon was mentioned in several reports as being a player of interest to Liverpool. It was back in June that a £75 million deal was agreed with Newcastle for Gordon, in a move that would have seen Joe Gomez move to St James' Park in a separate deal worth £45 million.

However, neither transfer was completed as Newcastle decided to pull the plug on both moves after managing to raise funds to comply with the Profit & Sustainability Rules before the June 30 deadline. Now that Gordon remains a member of the Magpies squad, it seems that the club are determined to keep him on Tyneside.
According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle are prepared to open new contract talks with Gordon. The report even claims that the Magpies are willing to make Gordon their highest-paid player at the club in order to fend off interest from Liverpool.
Gordon's current deal expires in 2026, and it has been stated that Newcastle want to hand the former Everton star a bumper new contract that sees him surpass the salary of club captain Bruno Guimaraes, who is reported to earn £160,000 per week. Gordon has scored one goal in six appearances for Newcastle this season, with his only strike coming in the 1-1 draw with Bournemouth in the second match of the campaign.
It remains to be seen if Liverpool still have an interest in signing Gordon in January or next summer. After the signing of Chiesa, the Reds now have six forward options in the squad: Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez.
