Newcastle United set for pre-window cash boost with £70k a week star to kickstart clear out

Newcastle United are set to benefit from Southampton's promotion from the Championship after the Saints triumphed at Wembley.

A 1-0 win was secured for the Hampshire club against Leeds United with former Newcastle star Adam Armstrong grabbing the winner in the capital. But the result could also land Newcastle a seven-figure fee and clear off Ryan Fraser from the wage bill.

It has emerged that both Fraser and the Saints are keen on a permanent move for the Scotland winger. Fraser fell out with Eddie Howe last year and has been a success story on the South Coast.

Fraser has one year left at Newcastle on his contract but has been told he has no future on Tyneside. Howe said he had no issue with Fraser last summer but also stated he had no place in his plans: "They are all great lads. I have no issue with any of them and I wish them well, but let's see what happens."

Speaking on his time at Southampton, Fraser had said: "At the end of the season, hopefully, I can stay. That’s my main goal, to stay at the club, but there are little goals to try to get there. First and foremost, my aim is to help the club get promoted, and it would be nice (to stay)."

The winger has made 44 appearances and scored eight goals to show he can handle the rigours of a long season and still has something to offer.

Fraser has also said this year: "I think everyone can see how much I’m enjoying it – it’s not a front that I’m putting on. I don’t think I’ve loved football this much for a long, long, long time."
