Newcastle United thankful to 8/10 man as two stars earn notable scores against Manchester City
Newcastle United earned a point against champions Manchester City on a day in which they went toe to toe with Pep Guardiola's men.
The Magpies fell behind the first half on 35 minutes when Josko Gvardiol was allowed time and space to finish after Jack Grealish's pass down the left. The game was tied up just before the hour mark when Anthony Gordon won a penalty then calmly stepped up to take it.
There were many battling performances, including 8/10 Nick Pope, despite Newcastle not being at their very best at St James' Park, with Bruno Guimaraes and Harvey Barnes earning notable scores. Here's how the Toon stars rated overall:
Nick Pope 8
A solid showing as he wiped out Erling Halaand and made a top notch save to deny Bernardo Silva. Man of the match in the end.
Kieran Trippier 7
Battled hard and had Newcastle well-organised. Knew when to keep it simple and when to take a chance.
Fabian Schar 7
Picked up a booking after being drawn in by Grealish antics. But put in a polished performance overall.
Dan Burn 8
Stood up to the threat of Halaand. Had a shaky first half but did what was asked of him overall.
Lewis Hall 7
Offered composure down the left.
Joelinton 7
A big presence in midfield. But bookings remain an issue as he notched up fourth yellow card of the season.
Bruno Guimaraes 6
Was much better after the break. Still adjusting to captaincy.
Sandro Tonali 7
Not at full tilt just yet but offered calmness in the middle.
Harvey Barnes 6
Felt he should have had a penalty. Did OK overall. No shots at goal and needs to be more of a threat.
Jacob Murphy 7
Offered some presence down the right.
Anthony Gordon 8
Won the penalty and kept his nerve to tuck it home. Was able to be the main man with Isak injured.
