The Newcastle United transfer wish that may not be granted and 'pivotal' six days ahead

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe could not guarantee that Kieran Trippier will still be at St James' Park after a deadline day - a situation he doesn't want to see.

The England full-back is understood to be open to a summer move despite having two years left on his contract after an extension was triggered in his existing deal. Howe wants to retain his experience and has asked Trippier to battle for his place with Tino Livramento.

Trippier is still expected to be in the squad for the trip to Bournemouth but discussions on his future remain ongoing between the England international and his representatives. When asked directly about Trippier's future and whether he wanted him to stay, Howe said: "I hope so. I can never answer these questions with absolute certainty because it's football and the transfer window is always unpredictable. But my wish is that he stays here and continues to play for us."

With deadline day now less than a week away and a crunch Carabao Cup game coming up against Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest in midweek, Howe did not dismiss the fact that with Bournemouth and the City Ground side to play away from home in the space of a few days that it already feels like the season is entering a "pivotal" moment.

Newcastle certainly can't afford to be passing up the chance to progress in the competition that arguably gives them the best chance of success this season. Howe said: "Yeah it's a pivotal week already! But every week is pivotal.

"We are entering a cup competition and we want to stay in it. We will look at that after this game. We have had only had one game and the early games set the tempo and energy, momentum.

"We have to take this game absolutely seriously and go into it with the right frame of mind. We have to try to get a positive result and if we can it's been a great start for us."
