After welcoming in 2025, which saw revellers miss out on the Newcastle's planned fireworks due to weather conditions, there comes good news of more New Year celebrations to come which will add plenty of sparkle of their own.

Chinatown Newcastle has now announced the date of its main event to mark Chinese New Year. The annual festival in the Chinese calendar begins mid-week this year on January 29 but the big celebration in the city is to be the following weekend, on Sunday, February 2.

The plans for 2025 - which will be the Year of the Snake - are set to see the focus of attention around Stowell Street at the heart of Chinatown. The annual celebration, which is a favourite with families, usually begins with a centrepiece parade which last year attracted big crowds to the Monument and more lining its route.

The procession, with its famous lion and dragon dance, brings the city centre alive with sound and colour as is makes its way, accompanied by drummers, to Stowell Street where it culminates with dances and firecrackers under the Chinese Arch. The February 2 programme of events is set to continue there throughout the day, with restaurants and businesses showcasing Chinese food and arts, ranging from calligraphy to music.

Preparations are under way for the big date which was announced on the Chinatown Newcastle Facebook page with everyone being invited to "celebrate Chinese new year with us".
