American Idol's Ratings Struggle Continues With UK Premiere

American Idol's steadily dipping ratings in the US have been matched in the UK.

The show, which now has Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj on its judging panel, returned for its twelfth season this week, airing on Channel 5 for the first time.

Last night's episode, showing auditions in Chicago, was simulcast on both Channel 5 and sister channel 5*, but with numbers combined the show struggled with less than a million viewers, according to Telly Mix.

The show has also been slowly dipping in the US and, though it is still doing comfortably better than most of its competitors, its lead is substantially less convincing than in previous years.

Also in last night's British figures, Celebrity Big Brother pulled in its second highest ratings of the current season so far, behind only the launch show from earlier this month.

Perhaps bolstered by the weather, Gillian Taylforth's elimination was seen by a peak crowd of 2.9 million people, with numbers averaging 2.4 million throughout the entire broadcast. An extra 160,000 tuned in on Channel 5+1.
