After Amy Winehouse's tragic death in 2011, a second coroner's inquest confirmed that her death was caused by "alcohol intoxicity". But today, her brother Alex claimed that his sister was killed by her long battle with bulimia rather than drug and alcohol abuse.

Alex, 34, said Amy's eating disorder, which she battled for 10 years, had left her "weaker and more susceptible".

Speaking to the Observer Magazine, he said: "She would have died eventually, the way she was going, but what really killed her was the bulimia.

"Had she not have had an eating disorder, she would have been physically stronger."

Alex claimed that "her friends were all doing it" but when they stopped, she never did.

He added: "We all knew she was doing it but it's almost impossible [to tackle], especially if you're not talking about it."

Amy was just 27 years old when she died on July 23rd 2011 at her home in Camden.

An initial inquest reached a verdict of misadventure and stated that she was more than five times the legal drink-drive limit when she died, having 416mg of alcohol per decilitre of blood in her system - the legal driving limit is 80mg.

The coroner said, "The unintended consequences of such potentially fatal levels was her sudden death."

A second inquest confirmed that it was alcohol that killed her.

After her death, her family set up the Amy Winehouse Foundation, a charity to help vulnerable young people and their battles with alcohol and drug abuse.

It also recently donated money to an eating disorder charity Beat to help fund an internet forum with a dedicated moderator.
