Batman Casts New Alfred To Replace Michael Caine

Fox's Batman prequel, Gotham, has cast a new Alfred to fill the shoes of Sir Michael Caine.

Sean Pertwee, son of Doctor Who actor Jon Pertwee, has landed the role of butler to the Wayne family. Alfred Pennyworth is a tough ex-marine from East London who has worked for Thomas and Martha Wayne for years and becomes extremely protective of their son Bruce in the wake of their tragic deaths.

Alfred was last played by Sir Michael Caine in the Dark Knight trilogy, so 49-year-old Pertwee has some big shoes to fill! But the star seems eager to take on the role and took to Twitter when the news was announced, saying: “Excited is an understatement.”

It's already been announced that The OC's Ben McKenzie will take the leading role of Detective James Gordon, but Fox has now also cast The Penguin.

Robin Lord Taylor from the Walking Dead is set to play Oswald Cobblepot, better known as Penguin. Cobblepot is a criminal mastermind and low-level psychopath working for Gotham gangster, Fish Mooney. In Batman Returns, The Penguin was played by Danny DeVito.

As well as Pertwee and Taylor landing roles in the new prequel, Being Human's Erin Richards has been cast as James Gordon's wife, Barbara Kean, and Zabryna Guevara will play Gordon's boss. There are still more casting decisions to be announced.
