Beyonce has been accused of plagiarism by a Belgian choreographer who claims the newly released ‘Countdown’ video rips off a number of sequences of her work.
The dancer has pointed out two specific scenes, including one where Beyonce looks through a window as three ballerinas perform in the background, as closely resembling her choreography in Rosas Danst Roasas and another production called Achterland, which was made in 1994.
According to Bossip, choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker told a Dutch blog: “I didn’t know anything about this. I’m not mad, but this is plagiarism.”
“What’s rude is that they don’t even bother about hiding it. They seem to think they could do it because it’s a famous work … Am I honoured? Look I’ve seen local school kids doing this. That’s a lot more beautiful.”
She may have a case – the director of ‘Countdown’ has already admitted to showing Beyonce footage for ‘inspiration’ before shooting the video.
“I brought Beyoncé a number or references and we picked some out together,” Adria Petty told MTV News. “Most were German modern dance references, believe it or not.”
It’s not the first time Bey has been accused of being a copycat. Earlier this year she admitted to borrowing ideas from another artist after her performance of Run the World at the Billboard Music Awards was revealed as being almost exactly the same as a Lorella Cuccarini show.
First fake baby bumps and now allegations of dance theft – it’s not been a great week for Beyonce so far!
